Ultimate Guide to Swimming Pool Safety

Summer is in full swing, which means that most of us are spending the hot summer days in our pools. As refreshing and fun as pools are, they can also be very dangerous if you do not take the proper precautions and adhere to pool safety guidelines. Before you or your children take another dip in the pool, read over this guide to make sure that your adventures at the pool this summer are safe!

Install Proper Barriers

Prevent children and pets from accidentally falling in the pool when you or another adult are not at the pool to supervise water activities by installing a secure four-sided barrier around your pool. Ensure that it has a self-latching gate and is out of reach of children. According to Red Cross, a four-sided fence reduces the risk of a child drowning by 83%.

Bonus Tip: Ensure that children do not have access to outside furniture that can help them climb over the fence and gain unauthorized access to the pool.

Secondary Security Measures

You can never be too cautious when it comes to pool safety. It is strongly advisable to install door alarms and locks on all doors and windows within direct access to the pool area. Alarms will alert you to small children getting into mischief. In addition, when the pool is not in use, a lockable pool cover is a great way to help prevent accidental drownings.

Compliant Drains

Due to the suction of drains, they can be hazardous to small children and pets. Make sure every drain on your pool has an anti-entrapment drain cover. Teach young children to avoid getting close to drains when swimming.

Implement Pool Rules

You don't want to be a buzzkill, but safety must always come first when swimming. So teach every person in your family and friends who visit the pool rules and enforce them. No one is going to have fun if someone gets hurt. Here are the most common pool rules:

  • Never dive headfirst into the pool unless it is in the designated diving area
  • Make sure all children steer clear of drains
  • Never swim alone - Only allow swimming when you either have a swimming buddy (if you're an adult) or an adult to supervise if it's children
  • Children should never swim alone, no matter how many kids there are at the pool
  • Never swim intoxicated - Your ability to make wise choices is greatly diminished
  • Teach children how to swim - This prevents panicking and accidental drowning
  • Never run around the pool area - Someone may fall, hit their head, and fall into the pool
  • Avoid loose clothing in the pool

This is not an extensive list since everyone's pool is different. Be sure to include additional rules that make your pool area as safe as possible.
