How Often Should I Test the Pool?
One of the most important aspects of pool maintenance is testing the chlorine and pH level. If these levels become imbalanced, it can increase the rate at which germs proliferate, and thus increase the risk of water contamination and of illness. We recommend testing the pool regularly during prime season, at least two or three times weekly.
How Often Should I Shock the Pool?
The frequency with which you need to shock the pool depends on temperature and pool use. During the summer swimming season, we recommend shocking at least once a week.
Is it Really Necessary to Brush the Pool?
Brushing the pool is far too often neglected. Not only does regular brushing help agitate the water, but it provides an important safeguard against the formation of algae spores. We recommend brushing once or twice weekly, whether manually or with an automatic pool cleaner.
When Should I Clean the Filter?
Take a look at the water pressure level when the water is clean, and when the filter has just been replaced. Then, monitor the pressure level throughout the swimming season. You’ll probably want to clean the filter anytime the pressure rises to 8 to 10 psi above where it was when the filter was brand new. This is really just a rule of thumb, however; if you look at the filter and it’s visibly dirty, there’s no problem with going ahead and cleaning it.
My Pool Water Looks Cloudy. What’s Causing That?
It could be that you just need to agitate the water more frequently; grab your pool brush and get going! Alternatively, it could mean that the levels are off. Test the chlorine and pH levels and make any necessary adjustments.
How Do I Keep the Pool Cover Clean?
During fall and winter, one of the most important aspects of pool maintenance is keeping dead leaves and tree debris off the cover. With dry leaves, a leaf blower should work just fine. For wet leaves, a special pool leaf rake is recommended.
When the Pool is Closed, Can I Stop Testing the Water?
You certainly don’t need to test it two or three times weekly, but we would recommend continuing to test it about once a month or so. Of course, you’re off the hook if the water is frozen.
Where Should I Store My Pool Chemicals During the Winter?
To maintain their potency, it’s best to store your pool chemicals somewhere dark, dry, and well-ventilated. Ideally, you’ll find somewhere with a temperature that’s consistently between 50 and 70 degrees. Also, make sure the storage area is properly secured.
