Potential Causes of Water Pooling in the Yard

An Issue with the Septic Tank
If you don’t have a septic system, then you can skip this segment. But if you do have a septic, and if the water is pooling near the septic system’s location, that could mean that your unit is backed up or isn’t draining properly. It may be time to call a septic company to come clean out your tank and ensure the drain field is functioning as intended.
Poorly Draining Soils
Most water drainage happens through the soil. If you have a big rain and your lawn doesn’t drain the way it’s supposed to, one potential reason is that your soil isn’t sufficiently porous. If you have a very clay-like lawn, you may need to treat it with some added organic matter to aid in proper drainage.
Low Spots
Of course, another reason why you might have drainage problems is that your house lies at the bottom of a hill or an incline. Even if you don’t live in a hilly area per se, you could experience drainage problems anywhere your lawn slopes downward. The first response should be addressing the grading around your home so that you don’t have water draining down toward the foundation. You might also consider constructing either a dry creek or a French drain to help channel water away from that low spot.
Water Main Rupture
The most unwelcome cause of flooding is that there is a leak in the water line that connects your home to city/municipal water. A ruptured water main will usually lead to standing water in your lawn, but you should notice some other effects as well. In particular, the water pressure in your home will suddenly drop. If this is the case, you’ll want to call the city, or a trusted plumber, to come diagnose the problem.
